Delightful Bone China Art Deco 10 x Piece "Tea for Two" Service, produced by Shelley, in their much admired Yellow Phlox collection - IDEAL CHINA No 0172 (Ideal China described by Shelley as " expensive items destined for export"). The service consists of Teapot (2 pint capacity); 2 x Teacups; 2 x Saucers; 2 x Side Plates; Milk Jug; Sugar Bowl and stylish Art Deco 2 handle Cake Plate.
In 1822, The Foley Potteries were established near Longton, Stoke-on-Trent - The Potteries, to produce earthenware from local clay. Henry Wileman became sole owner of the pottery in 1856 and introduced bone china items circa 1860. In 1872, Henry's son, James F.
And Joseph Shelley became partners, trading as Wileman &Co. James retired in 1884 and the china works became a Shelley family business, trading as Wileman & Co. In 1910, the Shelley backstamp was first introduced, with'Late Foley' included until 1916. The company name was changed from Wileman & Co to Shelley Potteries in 1925. Shelley's popularity peaked in the 1930s, when some of their most famous bone china dinnerware designs were introduced, many of which reflected the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Decoration to all pieces features the flowering Yellow Phlox, with a background of grey / brown foliage. Gilt trim to all pieces. All pieces are in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. Cups measure 3.25"/8.5cms in diameter and 2.5"/6cms high.14cms in diameter and the side plates 6.4/16cms square. The Cake Plate is 8.25/21cms square. Backstamps read " FINE BONE CHINA / Shelley (on banner) / ENGLAND" " IDEAL CHINA No 0172".
